kundalini bbq 1st BIRTHDAY
I had my first experience with Kundalini Yoga eight years ago and my mind was blown. Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of awareness. It is a yogic, scientific technology that uses mantras, mudras, specific breathing techniques, and yoga postures known as kriyas to help balance the glandular and nervous systems of the body. I could say MORE, but I will save that for another post. Anyways... After diligent practice and studying with the most amazing Kundalini teachers over the year of 2009 - Krishna Kaur, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa and Hari Kaur Khalsa - I decided it was time to guide my own class that year.
My KundaLOONEY class was wacky on all levels. You will see in the photo below Caitlyn even wore a lampshade instead of the more traditional turban on the head :) There was body glitter, stuffed animals, balloons, art supplies... AND Kundalini Yoga. I still remember that class, and I am almost certain I taught the ego eradicator and a kriya for liberation. I wanted to take these teachings that are so sacred and precise and offer them up in a way that was creative and fun.
Fast forward 8 years. I met Emma when she and my BFF Lauren came to visit me in Utah. Emma is a yoga teacher, music lover and creative Queen of the world. We connected instantly on the idea of making yoga more of a creative experience, while maintaining the integrity of the teachings. I moved to Seattle a while after our first meeting and soon enough Emma and I rented out a space in our neighborhood. We filled it with about 12 friends, she set up her turntables, we wrapped our heads up in turbans... and there it was, our first Kundalini BBQ. We have now been teaching this special class every month for a year.
We have had plenty of opportunities to step away from it because of locations falling through, working full-time, someone getting pregnant (ahem... Emma). But, we stayed committed and continued to teach! NO MATTER WHAT! This October we celebrated our 1 year birthday. One year of putting it all out there in a way that I only dreamed of one day having the courage to do. We have had the honor of guiding all types of people in all different chapters of their lives. Every time I leave one of these classes I am so lit up, so inspired and so honored to have witnessed it.
To all of those hearts who have gathered together for these classes, I bow so deeply to you. Thank you for taking a chance on a class that is out of the ordinary, a class that challenges you, a class that pushes you past your comfort. You have all come to the other side of something on that mat. I have seen it, I have felt it. And it will be with me forever.
Helene Christensen took this convertible photoshoot the summer of 2017 with some of the OG Kundalini BBQ babes. Helene is also responsible for the fab photos on this website. If you are in need of a sick headshot, dial her up.
The amazing Emma is also responsible for the visual tastings displayed on our social media platforms - she can make a gif like nobody's business.
